Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices and major functional units of DIMDI merged

May 26, 2020
The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) and major functional units of the German Institute for Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI) were merged into one authority under the auspices of the BfArM on 26 May 2020.

The Federal Ministry of Health had already announced this step in summer 2019. The aim is to combine the resources and expertise of both authorities and thus make the best possible use of the opportunities arising from the many developments in the health care system for the benefit of patients.

Synergy effects are being exploited, e.g. with a view to digitization in the health care system. Here, for example, the performance of tasks in the areas of e-health and new technologies is being strengthened. The expanded register structures in the German health care system can also be bundled within the framework of the merger, as is the case with PharmNet or the organ donation register.

Of course all diverse medical information and services of former DIMDI will be maintained in same quality and scope. Users will continue to have access to both customer service and usual contacts.

Since 26 May 2020, former DIMDI employees have to be contacted under new e-mail addresses and telephone numbers. Calls will be automatically forwarded during a transitional period.

Until further notice, all services of former DIMDI can be found as usual under www.dimdi.de. After a transitional period, they will be transferred to the BfArM website and users will be automatically redirected there.
