International Classification of Diseases
10th Revision

The abbreviation ICD means "International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems"; the number 10 signifies its 10th revision. This classification was developed by the World Health Organization and translated into German by DIMDI. It is part of the Family of International Health Classifications. For mortality statistics ICD-10 has been used in Germany since January 1, 1998. In ambulatory and stationary medicine diagnoses have been coded since January 1, 2000 according to a special adaptation of ICD-10, the so-called SGB V edition (PDF, 131 kB), now called GM edition: ICD-10-GM.

ICD-10 consists of three parts published in three separate volumes.

• Volume 1 contains an introduction, the List of Three Character Categories, the Tabular List of Inclusions and Exclusions and the Morphology of Neoplasms. The supplementary classifications (E and V codes) of ICD-9 have been integrated as chapters of their own into the classification.
• Volume 2 contains a general introduction to ICD, the guidelines for mortality and morbidity coding with many examples and an outline of the history of ICD.
• Volume 3 is the Alphabetical Index to the classification, an extensive collection of coded diagnoses, coded external causes of injuries and coded cases of poisoning and adverse effects of drugs and chemical substances.

All files of the German translation of ICD-10 and errata are available from our downloadcenter and can be stored on your personal computer. However, these files contain only the classification data. DIMDI does not offer any software tools for coding.
