DIMDI offers files of older revisions of ICD in German. At present ICD-9 and ICD-8 are available as translated by DIMDI and both ICD-8 and ICD-6 as translated by the German Democratic Republic. There is a table available with an overview in German language over the periods of use of these revisions both in the Federal Republic of Germany and in the German Democratic Republic.
ICD-9 was introduced in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in 1979 for mortality statistics. It was used by 1997 and replaced in January 1998 by ICD-10. For morbidity applications the GDR introduced ICD-9 in 1979. The FRG started in 1986 in hospitals with the three character version and changed to the four character version in 1994. ICD-9 was replaced by ICD-10 in January 2000.
If you are interested in the US ICD-9-CM (Clinical Modification), you will find the latest version (diagnoses, procedures and DRGs - Diagnosis related groups) also on the INTERNET (unfortunatly only abridged texts).
ICD-8 was used in the FRG (ICD-8 ("West")) and the GDR (ICD-8 ("Ost")) from 1968 to 1978 for mortality statistics. In the GDR it was also used for morbidity purposes during that period.
The three character version of ICD-8 in German is available on our web server. Furthermore, the complete Tabular List is available, however, as a scan - that means as an image - and not as files that can be used e.g. in word processors. To get the meaning of a code it is usually sufficient to consult the Tabular List. The files can be accessed from our Download Center. They are stored in PDF. The files are quite large.
ICD-6 was used in the FRG from 1952 to 1957 and in the GDR from 1952 to 1967 for mortality statistics. In the GDR it was also used for morbidity purposes during that period.
The three character codes of ICD-6 in German are available on our web server. Furthermore, the complete Tabular List and the Alphabetic Index are available as scans - that means as images - and not as files that can be used e.g. in word processors.
