While the application names are similar, the content, audience and areas of usage differ from each other. As there is no direct competition, DIMDI, which project manages PharmNet.Bund, and Cerner Deutschland GmbH have made an arrangement to allow for the coexistence and licensing, with CernerDeutschland GmbH granting DIMDI usage of the brand name PharmNet.
PharmNet.Bund, the pharmaceutical information portal of the German federation and the German regions called "Länder", is designed to function as an integrated drug information system, which makes all nationwide official data on approved medicinal products in Germany available in one central location.
PharmNet.Bund is a central platform that will enable reliable research to patients, physicians and pharmacists, provide efficient processing options to authorities, and provide easy template applications (e.g. for approval procedures) to the pharmaceutical industry.
The portal is not to be confused with the trademark PharmNet registered by Cerner Deutschland GmbH. PharmNet is a software supporting drug stock management and drug distribution as well as for the automation and rolespecific planning and control of medication distribution.
The software supports to ensure, according to the vendor, that
the correct dosage is administered and that any potential
medication side effects or interactions are detected prior to
administration in order to ensure and enhance quality standards in
healthcare institutions.
DIMDI provides high quality information for all health care
areas. It develops and operates database-supported information
systems for drugs and medical devices and is responsible for a
programme that evaluates medical procedures and technology (Health
Technology Assessment, HTA).
DIMDI is the publisher of official medical classifications
such as ICD-10-GM and OPS (German procedure classification) and
maintains medical terminologies, thesauri, nomenclatures and
catalogues (e.g. MeSH, UMDNS, Alpha-ID, LOINC, OID) that are
important for health care telematics and other applications.
DIMDI facilitates online access to its information systems
and 70 databases covering the entire field of medicine. It also
develops and maintains software applications and operates its own
data processing centre.
