Database service from 2017: facts instead of literature

Feb 17, 2016

In 2017, DIMDI will be concentrating its database service on medical facts and will be removing literature databases from its range of offers. Thereby it will yield resources for the development of its legally established information tasks. In the future DIMDI will therefore continue to offer and extend its information systems and databases relating to medicinal products, medical devices, medical concepts systems, healthcare data and the Health Technology Assessment.

With the redistribution of its resources DIMDI responds to the significant increase in statutory tasks over the past few years. In future, it will only be providing databases within the framework of legally established information systems. At the end of 2016, DIMDI will therefore remove all literature databases from its offered services, with the exception of DAHTA, GMS and GMS Meetings.

Literature databases have been an essential component of the institute for more than 40 years. DIMDI will in future still benefit from the experience gained during this period. it will continue to play an active role as a provider of medical databases, as a result of its information systems, and will even extend these databases: Its latest system, which is currently still in the process of being expanded, includes care data of persons insured by the statutory health system. This system provides completely new opportunities for research, namely for analysing the care situation within the framework of healthcare research and in terms of control tasks.

Medical research: on a central basis at ZB MED

The original separation between electronic information in literature databases and the paper-based form in libraries has gradually disappeared over the years. DIMDI's long-standing partner ZB MED (Leibniz-Informationszentrum Lebenswissenschaften – Leibniz Information Centre for Life Sciences) has increasingly also been taking over electronic services; years ago, DIMDI granted ZB MED access to some of its databases for the Centre's search portal "LIVIVO". Today, ZB MED is combining the two tasks, making it Germany's central provider of literature pertaining to the life sciences. Some of the databases that will in future no longer be offered by DIMDI will be available at ZB MED, e.g. MEDLINE, and also Psyndex or Ethmed, which were previously only retrievable from DIMDI.

Original data still available from DIMDI

Besides the information systems and databases mentioned above, DIMDI will in future continue to run its original databases and registers, as is the case in the PharmNet.Bund portal, a centralised drug information system of the Federal Government and the federal states. The OID register for the German healthcare sector is another example in case. The service offer will continue to include special databases for limited user groups (authorities in particular).

The following databases will no longer be on offer as of 2017:

  • BIOSIS Previews
  • Cochrane databases (CCTR, CDSR, CDAR, INAHTA, NHSEED)
  • CAB Abstracts
  • Global Health
  • Ethmed
  • PsycInfo
  • Psyndex
  • SciSearch

Manufacturer contact details for all configured databases can be found on the DIMDI website.
