How does the German MeSH help my research?

The German translation of the MeSH (Medical Subject Headings), created at DIMDI, is integrated into various databases of DIMDI, namely in MEDLINE, XTOXLINE, DAHTA and MEDIKAT.
Corresponding to the English CT (Controlled Terms), the German MeSH terms are found in the data field CTG (Controlled Term German). In the SmartSearch they can be found in the field "Deutsche Schlagwörter".

The benefit of this is that German search terms do not need to be translated but can be used directly for research.

Benefit for a text field search:

  • The German MeSH in the CTG data field is automatically taken into consideration, as all data fields describing content are incorporated into the text field search.

Benefit for a search with database-specific vocabulary:

  • The search with database-specific vocabulary is not specifically determined for use of the English language. The data field (CTG or German terms) with the German MeSH can also be used for this.
  • You can make use of all advantages of a thesaurus such as searching with subtopics or with qualifiers in German.
  • The MeSH hierarchy (e.g. topics and subtopics) can be displayed in German conveniently.
