PubMed and MEDLINE at DIMDI: is there any difference?

There is no difference in terms of content between PubMed from the NLM and the MEDLINE database at DIMDI. Both services contain the following specific documents:

  • Publisher documents: references to articles registered by publishing houses and included in MEDLINE before being assigned to a particular journal or specific issue of a journal. Consequently, they still possess incomplete source indications.
  • PubMed-not-MEDLINE documents: publications outside medicine or life sciences (e.g. astrophysics), which would actually be contained in PubMed and not in MEDLINE. No MeSH keywords are allocated to these documents.

Furthermore, DIMDI and PubMed offer the same search refinements for MEDLINE:

  • document types
  • age groups, sex
  • general concepts (subsets in case of PubMed) such as for example the possibility of restricting the search result to aspects of toxicology or adverse effects
  • qualifiers (subheadings in case of PubMed)

An additional function with DIMDI is integration of the German MeSH in MEDLINE. When conducting a search, you can not only view the MeSH in English, but also in German and use it in the search. The MeSH is available in alphabetical and structured form for both languages.

Likewise an additional feature with DIMDI is the parallel search in MEDLINE and other bibliographical databases. Consequently, documents from up to 39 medical bibliographical databases can be found with only a single search inquiry.

Please note that the free text search (entry of a term without data field specification) in MEDLINE at DIMDI differs from that at PubMed, since different data fields are included respectively.
