MEDIKAT corresponds to the catalogues of the Deutsche Zentralbibliothek für Medizin. Bibliographic information and indexing terms (MeSH, Medical Subjects Headings, Subject Headings Authority File of the German National Library) are searchable. It contains information from numerous countries with emphasis on documents in German and English.
| Subject Coverage | Medicine and Related Fields Alternative and non-orthodox medicine, biomedical anthropology, public health, also biomedical application of nursing, pharmacology, pharmacy, environmental health, literature for allied health personal; analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biology, biophysics, biotechnology, genetics, microbiology, molecular and cell biology, neurosciences, computer sciences and psychology; does not include literature for patients or non-professionals. |

The indexing with the polyhierarchical thesaurus MeSH (analogue to MEDLINE) enables precise and extensive searches. An exact description of the possibilities can be found under the point vocabulary.
A greater part of the dissertations and professorial dissertations are included in the database without keywords; completion of indexing takes place.
The database abstains from consolidating the separate volumes in a single database document. Thus we prevent the generation of documents with more than 250 separate volumes that are hard to manage. To illustrate the classification of separate volume and complete works in the separate volume document the title of the entirety (GSH) is now additionally prefixed by volume data and publication year of the separate volume.
Standing orders (SDI) are possible for Premium customers.
Medical Subject Headings- MeSH (CT) (thesaurus
with polyhierarchical structure)
Language of vocabulary: English and German.
The hierarchical structure of MeSH and additional information to the subject headings are not available in MEDIKAT
MeSH descriptors can be limited using more than 80 subheadings (e.g. epidemiology of a disease (FIND CT=…../QF=ep). MEDIKAT uses the Topical Subheadings of MEDLINE (see appendix), the Geographical Subheadings (additionally with German geographical terms), the Form Subheadings and the Language Subheadings. Subheadings are searchable as Qualifiers (F CT=EYE DISEASES/QF=in infancy & childhood) and in the Basic Index (F FT= EYE DISEASES in infancy & childhood/CT).
Uncontrolled Terms (UT) contain the terms of the Subject Headings Authority File of the German National Library; only in a part of all documents.
Check tags (human, animal, female, male) are not available. Weighting of Controlled Terms (CT) is not possible.
The following document sections are considered with the free text search (FT):
