Special Notes

ABEX Extension Abstract:

The Extension Abstract is only accessible to Derwent Subscribers in database versions DW and contains a more extensive description of contents.

CT (Controlled Terms):

The field CT is divided into groups according to the relation of the descriptors to single drugs. Each important drug reported in the original paper is assigned a separate indexing "sentence" which links together all concepts related to that compound.

  • Descriptors which are applicable to all drugs (common terms) can be found above the drug specific groups. As descriptors are conceptually linked it is possible to retrieve very specific search results by using the qualification "/same cont".
  • The descriptors in the Controlled Terms field may be qualified by special aspects (roles). Their two letter abbreviations are attached to the CT by using a slash, e.g. CT=paracetamol/QF= ae(ae= adverse effect).
  • Descriptors hyphenated in the printed Derwent thesaurus may be searched with or without the hyphen.
  • Fullstops in thesaurus descriptors are removed, e.g. TOX. or LAB.ANIMAL appear as CT=TOX and CT=LAB ANIMAL.
  • Quite often designations are divided into several controlled terms, e.g. High Density Lipoprotein appears as CT=HIGH and CT=DENSITY and CT=LIPOPROTEIN. Please search with F high density lipoprotein/CT or F CT=(high and density and lipoprotein)/same cont
  • In addition to specific controlled terms higher terms are present in the record, e.g. in the case of CT = VALERIANA: CT = BOTANY is available.

Standing orders (SDI) are possible for Premium customers.

The structure of the field CT (Controlled Terms) is described in the Special Features section. Using controlled terms, especially in combination with qualifiers, very specific searches can be carried out in the ongoing files (List of qualifiers in the appendix).

Subject: Adverse effects of aciclovir

Profile table:

Parameter Counter Number of Hits    Query
C= 1 1363333    DD83
S= 2 601    CT=ACICLOVIR/AE

Using the qualification "/same cont" search results can be obtained, in which the searched controlled terms occur not only together in the CT-field but are also contextually linked to each other.

Subject: Heparin treatment of embolism

Profile table:

Parameter Counter Number of Hits    Query
C= 1 1363333    DD83
S= 2 756    CT=(HEPARIN/QF=TR AND EMBOLISM/QF=TR)
  3 715    2/SAME CONT

Profile table (alternative):

Parameter Counter Number of Hits    Query
C= 1 1363333    DD83
S= 2 715    (CT=HEPARIN/QF=TR AND CT=EMBOLISM/QF=TR)/SAME CONT

Searches can be performed using controlled terms which are mapped as higher terms to specific controlled terms.

Parameter Counter Number of Hits    Query
C= 1 1363333    DD83
S= 2 949    CT=EYE DISEASE/QF=TR AND CT=ANTIBIOTICS
  3 873    2/SAME CONT

The codes or descriptors of the fields SC/SH and IC/ IT> enable searches for broad subject areas. (Lists of codes and descriptors in appendix). For this purpose qualifiers may be used without linkage to a CT.

AB: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluated the impact of acyclovir on ulcer healing, lesional, genital and plasma HIV-1 RNA among 422 patients with genital ulcer disease in Malawi. 85% Of ulcers were healed at day 14 with no difference between treatment arms. Among 244 HIV-1/HSV-2 co-infected individuals, acyclovir reduced lesional HIV-1 RNA and seminal HIV-1 RNA, but not cervical HIV-1 RNA or plasma HIV-1 RNA. Episodic HSV treatment with acyclovir added to syndromic management does not produce a significant clinical benefit in this African population.
